Biographie

Julie Sissia is the scientific project manager of the Franco-German Research Fund on the Provenance of Cultural Objects from sub-Saharan Africa at the Centre Marc Bloch, Berlin. She holds a PhD in Art History from Sciences Po Paris and the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf; her research focuses on the transnational history of art criticism and exhibitions. After working as a research fellow at the Deutsches Forum für Kunstgeschichte on the ERC project OwnReality, and then as assistant curator of the Hans Hartung retrospective at the Musée d’Art moderne de Paris, she led the Franco-German humanities and social sciences programme at the Agence nationale de la recherche, before developing Franco-German museum cooperation at the Deutscher Museumsbund. In 2023, she co-founded the Académie des Traces, a programme on colonial legacies in museums for early-career researchers and museum professionals, which now brings together more than 300 members across Europe and Africa. In 2024, to mark Marc Bloch’s entry into the Panthéon, she launched “L’histoire cherche son lieu”, a project with the visual artist Anaëlle Vanel, in partnership with the École normale supérieure de Lyon. She has taught at Sciences Po, the École du Louvre and the Université de Fribourg.
